Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership
Overview
The Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership shall be given annually to graduate and professional students who display leadership and public engagement which is clearly "above and beyond" one's normal duties and responsibilities. The award shall be given to one graduate and one professional student and each receive a scholarship of $1000. Candidates must demonstrate dedication and assistance that benefit an individual, group or community, or strengthens a democratic way of life.
Public Engagement is defined as:
- Excellence in Scholarship: Facilitating and improving public engagement initiatives in one's own community.
- Research: Developing, conducting and disseminating original and publishable public engagement research.
- Community Concerns: Setting up local initiatives that could create reciprocal partnerships within the community.
Procedures
- Nominee must submit application for the Presidential Leadership and Service Award by deadline in order to qualify for the Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership.
- The Presidential Leadership and Service Awards Selection Committee shall identify graduate and professional student awardees for the Presidential Leadership and Service Award. (The president of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly shall serve on the Presidential Leadership and Service Awards Selection Committee.)
- Composition of the Mary A. McEvoy Award Selection Committee shall consist of the following:
- President of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (facilitator)
- One graduate student or one professional student based on GAPSA President's degree declaration
- One faculty member from the Department of Educational Psychology
- One at-large faculty member
- One representative from the Office of the Vice President and Executive Vice Provost
- The finalists for the Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership Award shall be given four essay questions to be completed prior to the interview.
- Please describe your history of involvement since your arrival at the University of Minnesota.
- How have you developed public engagement initiatives relating to your won filed of study or to interdisciplinary fields of study?
- How have you conducted yourself with the four essential roles of leaders (visionary/strategies, politician/campaigner, coach/team builder, change agent)?
- What advice would you give to your successor and other future University of Minnesota leaders?
- The Mary A. McEvoy Award Selection Committee shall review finalist's application materials and essay. Candidates are interviewed by the Selection Committee.
- One graduate and professional student shall be selected as recipients of the Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership.
- Recipients are notified: Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership.
- The Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership shall be presented at the Annual President's Student Leadership and Service Awards Banquet.
- The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly will host a private reception for the recipients of the Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership.
